Nationwide Gentrification

Across the United States from New Orleans down in the South all the way to Oakland in the West Coast, the parallelism of gentrification in these urban and colored cities have faced the issue of a housing crisis due to an increase in rent, property value, and development. At least four years ago when housing had become a dominant issue in Oakland, natives saw that many of the neighbors, family, and friends had been forced to leave to further cities that were more affordable such as Antioch, Stockton, Tracy, and others. KTVU covers insight on tactics of resistance to the gentrification underway in the Town that potentially comes with racism, Oakland natives have demonstrated their culture and people will fight to stay and keep their community together through BBQ's and local events put together such as the 510 Day that last years theme was, "We Still Here" standing up against gentrification and the displacement of these locals.

The same problem has occurred and is still being dealt with in New Orleans. Many New Orleans have recognized the cultural shift and the income of outsiders. In a New York Times article, journalist  Lolis Elie, a native, shares her opinion regarding the issue of gentrification in her hometown.
Post-hurricane Katrina after a few years, she explains, "The city has become less populous, less black, more white, richer at its historic center and poorer in many surrounding neighborhoods."
